The Indian Army's Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) has joined forces with IIT-M Pravartak Technologies Foundation to accelerate the development of indigenous military technologies. The collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on Thursday in Chennai, aims to address the gap between military needs and academic research by combining expertise from academia, industry, and the armed forces.
A key component of the partnership is the establishment of a Nodal Indigenisation Centre (NIC) in Avadi. This centre will tap into the region’s industrial ecosystem, supporting the growth of Tamil Nadu’s defence corridor as a hub for innovation and manufacturing.

M J Shankar Raman, CEO of IIT-M Pravartak, highlighted that India’s push towards self-reliance in defence technology requires strong collaboration between the military, academia, and innovation ecosystems. Maj Gen Lalit Kapoor, Commander of the Base Workshop Group (EME), noted that this partnership will help the army enhance its operational readiness, upgrade existing weapon systems, and develop advanced technologies for future defense needs, reducing dependence on external sources.
The collaboration marks a significant step in India’s defense modernization efforts, focusing on cutting-edge, home-grown solutions for military requirements.
