The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has launched the Centre for Advanced Research on Spirituality, Science, and Society to study the intersection of spirituality, meditation, science, and society. The Centre will focus on research themes such as the physiological impact of meditation, spiritual experiences, and the role of architecture in spiritual spaces.
The Centre was inaugurated on with a generous Rs 5 crore donation from IIT Madras alumnus, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, a world-renowned spiritual leader. He emphasized the importance of meditation in improving focus, efficiency, and overall well-being, beyond measurable benefits, helping individuals achieve inner peace.

The Centre will introduce academic programs on meditation and spirituality, support PhD and post-doctoral students, and host conferences and workshops. It will also establish a mind-body-soul laboratory to further explore these themes and promote personal and mental well-being in conjunction with technological advancements.
IIT Madras Director, Prof. V. Kamakoti, praised the Centre’s focus on student wellness and mental health, calling it a vital step for holistic growth. Prof. Rajesh Kumar, Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, described the Centre as an essential addition to their mission of integrating personal well-being with scientific progress.
