In a significant step towards strengthening academic and industrial ties between India and Japan, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati recently hosted a high-level Japanese delegation, led by HORII Iwao, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and ONO Keiichi, Ambassador of Japan to India.
Accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Japan, the delegation’s visit marked a major milestone in the growing relationship between IIT Guwahati and Japan. Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, warmly welcomed the delegation and highlighted the institute’s longstanding and fruitful collaboration with Japan.
He pointed out that IIT Guwahati currently hosts over ten honorary professors from Japan and has seen a significant increase in student exchanges, with more than 70 Japanese students participating in exchange or joint degree programs in the last two years alone. Professor Jalihal also emphasized the strong academic and research partnership that IIT Guwahati has developed with Gifu University in Japan, underscoring the deepening academic ties between the two nations.
State Minister HORII Iwao acknowledged the rapid progress made by IIT Guwahati in recent years and commended the growing academic collaboration between the institute and its Japanese counterparts. He expressed his confidence in the continued success of these partnerships, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in fostering innovation and advancing research in both countries.
Ambassador ONO Keiichi also addressed the gathering, focusing on the logistical challenges faced by students traveling between Japan and India. He assured the delegation that the Embassy of Japan would work closely with IIT Guwahati to streamline the visa application process for students heading to Japan. This assurance was welcomed by both students and faculty alike, as it promises to ease the flow of academic exchange and further promote student mobility between the two nations.

The delegation’s visit to the IIT Guwahati campus included a tour of the institute’s cutting-edge technological hubs. One of the highlights was a visit to the Centre for Nanotechnology, where the delegates toured the ISO 5 and 6 clean room facilities and were briefed on the advanced technological products currently under development.
The delegation also visited the IIT Guwahati Research Park, where they interacted with several startups incubated within the park. One of the key demonstrations was a live showcase of a robotic hand, developed by researchers in the park, highlighting the institute’s commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.
Additionally, a presentation on the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII) was made to the delegation, showcasing IIT Guwahati’s commitment to advancing healthcare research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration in the region. The AAHII is part of the institute’s ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of research and development in healthcare, a field where Japan’s expertise and India’s emerging capabilities can collaborate for significant impact.
The visit underscored the growing synergy between India’s research excellence and Japan’s technological innovation. It also paved the way for increased student mobility, joint research ventures, and further collaborations between the two countries.
