India is currently grappling with a shortage of trained professionals in key areas such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, rehabilitation psychology, special education, and other allied health fields. As the demand for rehabilitation services rises due to an increase in neurodevelopmental conditions, mental health disorders, rare diseases, age-related impairments, and trauma recovery, the country’s rehabilitation system remains fragmented, with limited coordination between disciplines and unequal access to care, particularly in rural regions. SMRU aims to tackle these issues by providing a comprehensive solution that integrates education with hands-on clinical practice.
The university is designed to bridge the gaps in rehabilitation education and services, aligning with the objectives of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPWD Act) and the constitutional mandate for inclusive growth. SMRU’s unique model goes beyond being just an academic institution; it offers a systemic response to the country’s rehabilitation challenges by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
The university’s fully integrated clinical and academic ecosystem is one of its key differentiators. Located in Hyderabad, the campus includes a 100-bedded Medical Rehabilitation Hospital, a 50-bedded Psychiatric Rehabilitation Facility, a Special Education School, and advanced laboratories with simulation-based training environments. Students will gain clinical experience early in their academic journey, with real-time exposure to various fields such as therapy, psychology, nursing, public health, biomedical sciences, and education. This approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped to address the complex needs of patients across a range of rehabilitation disciplines.

Over the next decade, SMRU aims to train more than 30,000 rehabilitation professionals and provide clinical and outreach services to approximately 12 lakh individuals.
