Centre Allocates Rs 2,771 Crore to Boost Higher Education in Telangana

The Central Government has earmarked Rs. 2,771.25 crore for nine centrally funded Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Telangana for the period 2023-25, reflecting a strong push to enhance infrastructure, research, and digital learning in the state. Among these institutions, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal has been allocated Rs. 64.38 crore, with Rs. 85.94 crore directed towards infrastructure development and Rs. 55.79 crore for advancing digital learning. During the same period, research initiatives at NIT Warangal are set to benefit from Rs. 131.89 crore in grants.

Telangana hosts nine Central Government-funded HEIs, including NIT Warangal, alongside 35 Kendriya Vidyalayas in the state and one in the Warangal Parliamentary Constituency. To further strengthen the quality of higher education, the Ministry of Education is implementing the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme designed to support state universities and colleges in meeting prescribed academic standards. Since its inception, RUSA has approved 94 projects worth Rs. 767.60 crore in Telangana, including eight units totaling Rs. 81 crore in the Warangal Parliamentary Constituency.

In addition, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has been actively releasing funds for infrastructure, research grants, and digital learning facilities. Between 2023 and 2025, Telangana’s HEIs are expected to utilize Rs. 373.8 crore for infrastructure development and Rs. 640.8 crore for research and digital learning initiatives. According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2022-23 (Provisional), Telangana has a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 42.7, significantly above the national average of 29.5, with a total enrollment of 15,28,573 students. In the Warangal Parliamentary Constituency, enrollment stands at 1,65,955, covering the districts of Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, and Jayashankar Bhupalapally.

Support for students also extends through scholarships and financial assistance. The National Scholarships Portal (NSP) reported 1,627 students in Warangal district receiving higher education scholarships during 2023-24 to 2024-25. Additionally, 1,176 students benefitted from the PM-USP Yojana, including components for scholarships and interest subvention.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted these developments while responding to a question from Congress MP Dr. Kadiyam Kavya in the Lok Sabha on the status of Central Government-funded HEIs in Telangana, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s higher education ecosystem.
