The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched a new Class 9 English textbook titled Kaveri, which replaces the previous books Beehive and Moments. The new book aims to strike a balance by giving equal representation to both Indian and international writers.
Prepared under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, Kaveri includes 16 texts, eight of which are written by Indian authors. The list features renowned writers like Tamil poet Subramania Bharati, Sudha Murty, Naga writer Temsula Ao, and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The book begins with Murty’s story from How I Taught My Grandmother to Read and Other Stories.

The remaining texts are from international writers, including American poet David Roth, English poet Charles Swain, and Singapore-based author Irene Chua. The anthology also includes inspiring pieces, such as an interview with Paralympic athlete Deepa Malik.
This new textbook reduces the total number of English textbooks for Class 9 from two to one and decreases the number of texts from 29 to 16, focusing more on quality content while ensuring diversity in literature.
