India has approved three leading foreign universities to establish campuses in Mumbai and Bengaluru. The move supports the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to position India as a global destination for higher education.
India has taken another significant step toward becoming a global higher education destination by approving three foreign universities to establish campuses in the country. The Ministry of Education announced that two universities from the United Kingdom and one from Australia have received Letters of Approval (LoAs) to begin operations in India.
The approved institutions include the University of Bristol and the University of York from the UK, both of which will establish campuses in Mumbai. Australia's University of New South Wales (UNSW) will set up its campus in Bengaluru.
The approvals were formally handed over by Higher Education Secretary and University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Vineet Joshi in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The initiative is part of the government's efforts under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to strengthen the internationalization of higher education and attract world-class academic institutions to India.
Speaking at the event, Pradhan said the arrival of these universities represents a major milestone in realizing the vision of NEP 2020. He highlighted Mumbai and Bengaluru as two of India's leading centers for innovation, technology, and knowledge-driven industries.
The University of Bristol plans to launch its Mumbai Enterprise Campus. The proposed academic offerings will include immersive arts, finance, data science, economics, business management, entrepreneurship, and innovation-related programs.
The University of York will establish its first overseas campus in Mumbai. The institution intends to offer courses in finance, computer science with artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, business, economics, management, and creative industries.
Meanwhile, the University of New South Wales will launch its Bengaluru campus at Manyata Business Park. The campus is expected to begin operations in August and will offer programs in business, computer science, cybersecurity, renewable energy, health, transport, and education.
Education experts believe the entry of these universities will provide Indian students with access to globally recognized degrees without leaving the country. It is also expected to encourage academic collaboration, research partnerships, and international knowledge exchange.
According to the Ministry of Education, the UGC's regulations provide a transparent and streamlined process for internationally reputed institutions to establish campuses in India while maintaining academic autonomy and global standards.
The government sees these developments as a reflection of growing confidence among global universities in India's academic and regulatory environment. Officials believe the initiative will help create a more competitive, inclusive, and future-ready higher education ecosystem.
With the latest approvals, the total number of Letters of Approval issued to foreign higher educational institutions has risen to five. The other two institutions that previously received approval are the University of Southampton and the University of Liverpool.

The University of Southampton has already started academic operations in India for the 2025-26 academic session. In addition, the UGC has issued 10 Letters of Intent to universities from the UK, the United States, Australia, and Italy that are exploring opportunities to establish campuses across India.
Several foreign institutions have already entered the Indian market through GIFT City in Gujarat. These include Deakin University, the University of Wollongong, and Queen's University Belfast, which have commenced operations in the education hub.
As more international universities choose India as a destination for expansion, the country is steadily advancing its goal of becoming a leading center for global higher education, research, and innovation.
