With the March 31 deadline for the financial year fast approaching, the Centre for Transforming India (CFTI) is focusing on a series of timely education projects aimed at utilizing unspent Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. These projects are specifically designed to be executed within short timelines and target ongoing gaps in the infrastructure, learning resources, and student mobility at government and rural schools. These persistent challenges have continued to influence both school attendance and overall learning outcomes in many underserved areas.
The initiative launched by CFTI encompasses a variety of educational and school development projects that can be effectively implemented within the remaining fiscal year. Among the key projects are those that support student mobility, such as the distribution of bicycles for girls, which will help ease access to schools in rural areas.
Additionally, CFTI is focusing on providing academic kits and scholarships to ensure that students from all backgrounds can continue their education without the hindrance of financial constraints. The initiative also aims to enhance digital learning capabilities in schools by installing tablets and computers, thus providing a much-needed boost to the technological infrastructure in these schools.
Upgrades to classrooms and furniture are also a key part of the program, along with improvements to drinking water and sanitation facilities, which are vital to maintaining student health and attendance. A major aspect of the CFTI initiative is the development of sports and physical education infrastructure in rural schools. By addressing the lack of recreational and physical activities, CFTI aims to create a more holistic educational environment that encourages both mental and physical growth.
Amit Deshpande, Chief Operating Officer at CFTI, explained that the primary goal of these projects is to ensure that CSR funds can be utilized within the reporting cycle, despite the time constraints. He emphasized, “As the financial year draws to a close, CSR teams often face constraints related to time and execution. Having projects that are ready for implementation allows CSR funds to be deployed within the reporting cycle while addressing specific, on-ground requirements of schools and students”.

CFTI’s vast experience in executing similar initiatives across multiple states has made the organization well-equipped to carry out these projects at scale. In previous years, CFTI has successfully distributed over 35,000 bicycles, awarded more than 1,300 scholarships to students ranging from early education to postgraduate levels, and provided more than 800 tablets and 100 computers to schools across India.
Furthermore, the organization has been instrumental in upgrading over 90 classrooms, donating over 1,200 benches to schools across Maharashtra, Bihar, Vizag, and Pondicherry, and installing 34 Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifiers to ensure clean drinking water for students.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, CFTI has carried out comprehensive school development work in 144 schools, including the development of sports facilities in select rural areas. These initiatives have not only improved the physical learning environment but have also helped in addressing some of the most pressing educational challenges faced by underserved communities.
As the deadline approaches, CFTI’s proactive approach aims to ensure that the CSR funds are not only effectively utilized but also translated into meaningful, measurable outcomes for the schools and students. By focusing on execution readiness, monitoring, and reporting, CFTI ensures that the CSR allocations are converted into tangible, impactful initiatives that make a real difference at the grassroots level.
The organization continues to collaborate closely with corporates to implement education projects that not only meet the financial year-end deadlines but also contribute to the long-term development of India’s educational infrastructure.
