In a recent interview with M R Yuvatha, Senior Correspondent at siliconindia, Dr Abhishek Tiwari shared his insights on balancing technology with human empathy, storytelling, and emotional intelligence in sales.

In today’s digital-first world, sales success no longer hinges solely on technology’s efficiency, but on the seamless blend of human empathy and insight with automation, where machines scale reach and humans close the trust gap that truly drives lasting partnerships.

While AI and technology have transformed sales by analyzing data, predicting behavior, and generating leads, connecting with clients remains inherently human. Empathy and human interaction continue to be at the heart of building lifelong relationships, often referred to as ‘Customer for Life’ (CFL). Drawing from decades of experience that began with door-to-door sales in 1999, seasoned sales professionals note that successful sales rely on two critical factors, technical and behavioral. Historically, the behavioral aspect dominated, while technology was often underutilized.

Where Technology Enables and Humans Lead

Today, technology serves as a vital aid, enhancing efficiency, synchronizing efforts, and saving time. Yet, it cannot replace the salesperson’s role in understanding who to meet, where to meet, or how to establish trust with clients. Modern tools now allow sales teams to quickly assess customer behavior, enabling a targeted approach from the very first interaction. Despite these technological advances, the human element empathy, appreciation, credibility, and emotional intelligence remains the differentiator that builds meaningful connections and sustains long-term relationships.

Even as AI streamlines lead generation and analysis, the command and influence that a salesperson exerts through voice, expression and presence cannot be replicated. Within the industry, it is widely accepted that technology supports the process, but human judgment and emotional engagement will always lead, providing an unmatched edge in sales.

The Irreplaceable Power of Human Storytelling

In the modern sales landscape, storytelling emerges as a domain where human skills distinctly outperform AI. While technology can suggest next steps or provide insights, it cannot craft authentic stories that genuinely resonate with clients. Effective storytelling is not a new concept but a timeless approach to connect with prospects. The essence lies in sharing real experiences or incidents that clients can relate to, which naturally builds trust something fabricated by technology cannot achieve.

Organizations are encouraged to train their sales teams to leverage data for storytelling without losing authenticity. While AI can retrieve primary or secondary information and analyze customer behavior patterns, sales professionals must convert these insights into personalized narratives. Effective storytelling in sales focuses on problem-solving and creating comfort for the client, rather than merely promoting a product. Teams must learn to align data with emotion, customizing stories for each prospect, recognizing that repetition diminishes impact.

Furthermore, sales professionals should be equipped to spontaneously create stories during client interactions, based on probing questions and real-time responses. By combining data-driven insights with behavioral understanding and emotional intelligence, storytelling becomes a strategic tool that strengthens relationships and enhances influence, proving that even in a technology-enabled environment, human creativity and empathy remain irreplaceable in the industry.

The Human Intelligence Behind Sales Success

In an era dominated by data and technology, the human element can easily be overlooked, making emotional intelligence and mindfulness essential for sales effectiveness. While technology enhances efficiency by providing knowledge, skills, and command over data, it does not guarantee true effectiveness. Real impact comes from applying emotional intelligence leveraging empathy, self-awareness, social skills, and motivational abilities to genuinely connect with clients.

Drawing on principles from Aristotle’s ethos, pathos, and logos, effectiveness depends on credibility, human connection, and logical reasoning.

Even the most technologically skilled professional cannot replace the human factor in building trust. Clients respond not to the sophistication of data or AI tools, but to whether the salesperson understands their challenges, addresses their concerns authentically, and communicates in a way they can relate to. Emotional intelligence, therefore, becomes the key differentiator that transforms efficiency into meaningful, lasting client relationships in the industry.

Today we have technology that can rule the market, but we can never truly lead until we build deep-rooted relationships with our customers.

The New Role of Sales Coaching in the Digital Age

In the industry, sales coaching targets professionals already in the field who seek to excel, rather than beginners who require training. Effective coaching begins with adaptability, helping individuals embrace new approaches while balancing technology with human connection. Sales leaders must first embody the strategies they advocate, as teams learn more from observed behavior than directives.

Coaching guides professionals to create people-centric strategies grounded in practical experience. By demonstrating emotional intelligence through real interactions, role plays and hands-on guidance, leaders foster belief in the human factor, cultivating emotionally balanced, adaptable, and high-performing teams that drive measurable performance and client engagement.

Forging Ahead!

Visionary organizations are deliberately aligning technologists and sales teams around the customer by forming cross-functional squads. Data scientists, product engineers, and sales professionals jointly design customer journeys to ensure technology addresses real human needs, not just operational efficiency. Sales teams share frontline insights on buyer emotions, objections, and trust gaps, while technologists translate these insights into smarter, ethical AI solutions.

Leaders reinforce collaboration through shared success metrics that go beyond revenue to include trust, adoption, and long-term value. This balance enables technology to drive scale while humans deliver empathy, judgment, and ethical impact.
