Telangana has inaugurated the Young India Physical Education and Sports University in Hyderabad as part of its plan to become a national sports hub. The state will also host major sporting events, including the Khelo India Youth Games 2026.
Telangana has inaugurated the Young India Physical Education and Sports University (YIPESU) in Hyderabad, marking a major step toward developing sports education, training, and infrastructure in the state.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inaugurated the university along with Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President and former athlete PT Usha at the Gachibowli stadium. The launch was part of the inauguration of the Gachibowli Sports District, aimed at strengthening the state’s sporting ecosystem.
Reddy said Telangana is moving towards becoming a major sports hub in India by investing in modern facilities, athlete development, and large-scale sporting events.
He announced that Telangana will host the 8th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games 2026 and the National Inter-District Junior Athletics Meet (NIDJAM). These events are expected to provide young athletes with more opportunities to compete and develop their skills.
The state has also secured hosting rights for several professional leagues, including the Hockey India League, World Pickleball League, Archery Premier League, and Tennis Premier League.
Reddy said these developments reflect Telangana’s growing role in India’s sports landscape and its focus on creating a stronger pipeline of athletes.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister highlighted the need to improve sports infrastructure in Hyderabad. He said the city had not hosted major sporting tournaments for nearly two decades and that existing sports facilities had not received enough attention in recent years.
“In the last 20 years no major tournament was organised in Hyderabad and particularly in the last 10 years the sports facilities turned into wedding halls and places to host entertainment events. This is bound to change now”, Reddy said.
The newly inaugurated Young India Physical Education and Sports University aims to provide structured education and training in physical education, sports science, coaching, and athlete development. The institution is expected to support the creation of skilled professionals who can contribute to India’s growing sports ecosystem.
The Gachibowli Sports District is also expected to become a key centre for sports activities in Telangana, with improved infrastructure for athletes, coaches, and sporting events.

The state government believes that hosting major competitions and strengthening sports education will help identify young talent and prepare athletes for national and international competitions.

The launch of YIPESU comes at a time when states are increasingly focusing on sports as a sector for youth development, employment opportunities, and global recognition.
Through the new university and upcoming sporting events, Telangana aims to create a long-term ecosystem that supports athletes from grassroots levels to professional competitions.
