Scientific Collaboration Supports Research Growth
The presence of researchers across different disciplines highlights the importance of sustained investment in scientific infrastructure, academic collaboration and specialist expertise. Universities and research institutions play an important role in supporting new discoveries, training future researchers and developing solutions to complex challenges.
Dr Sundeep Salvi, Founder of the Pulmocare Research and Education (PURE) Foundation, highlighted the collective achievement of Pune's research community.
“The presence of 92 Pune-based scientists among the world’s top 2% is a remarkable achievement, not for any one institution, but for the entire scientific ecosystem of Pune,” - Dr Sundeep Salvi, Founder of the Pulmocare Research and Education (PURE) Foundation.
He also highlighted the breadth of disciplines represented, including physics, astronomy, chemistry, artificial intelligence, climate science, medicine and public health. The diversity of research areas reflects the contribution of different scientific communities to Pune's academic standing.
Research Impact Extends Beyond Rankings
International research lists can provide visibility for scientists and institutions, helping showcase areas of academic strength. However, citation-based rankings represent only one measure of scientific influence. Research quality, teaching, collaboration, practical applications and societal benefits also contribute to the wider impact of scientific work.
For higher education institutions, such recognition can support efforts to strengthen research programmes, encourage interdisciplinary projects and create opportunities for emerging scholars. Continued investment in laboratories, funding, mentorship and partnerships will remain important for maintaining research progress.
Pune's representation in the 2026 global list highlights the contribution of its scientific institutions to India's research landscape. By supporting collaboration and translating scientific discoveries into practical outcomes, the city's research community can continue to contribute to advances in knowledge, technology and public welfare.
