The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has inaugurated a ₹3.30-crore construction robotics laboratory with support from Bechtel India, creating a new platform for research, innovation and industry collaboration in construction and infrastructure technology. The laboratory was inaugurated on September 22, 2026, at the IIT Madras campus.
The facility has been established with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from Bechtel India Private Limited. Bechtel India is the Indian arm of Bechtel, a global engineering, construction, procurement and project management company involved in large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects. The collaboration aims to connect academic research with practical engineering requirements and develop advanced technology solutions for the construction sector.
The new laboratory will focus on construction robotics, automation and advanced construction technologies. Through the partnership, IIT Madras faculty and researchers will work with Bechtel India professionals to explore real-world construction challenges, develop prototypes and test technologies that could eventually be applied to infrastructure projects.
Raja Yeluri, Managing Director, Bechtel India, said, “This partnership gives IIT Madras students and faculty, and industry engineers a shared space to turn real construction challenges into automated solutions — and to build the talent our industry will need over the next several decades.”
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen industry-oriented engineering education. Bechtel India will contribute industry perspectives to curriculum development and provide mentorship from professionals. The company will also explore internship opportunities at its offices for selected students, giving learners opportunities to gain practical exposure to engineering and construction technologies.
Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, said, “Industry–academia partnerships play a pivotal role in advancing research and innovation, especially in niche domains such as robotics and automation in construction.”
He added that the partnership would help IIT Madras address industry-relevant challenges while creating opportunities to test and demonstrate promising technologies.
The laboratory will support joint research and development, consulting and technology development, with potential outcomes including research publications, patents, prototypes and industry demonstrations. Students will also gain exposure to emerging technologies and practical applications that could support careers in deep-tech and advanced engineering fields.
The partnership is planned as a long-term collaboration. IIT Madras and Bechtel India intend to explore projects that can improve the use of robotics and automation in construction while helping develop a skilled workforce for the sector. The initiative is expected to support research and training opportunities, including for master's students, over the coming years.
The launch reflects the growing connection between engineering education and industry-led technology development. By bringing together IIT Madras's academic and research capabilities with Bechtel India's engineering expertise, the new robotics laboratory aims to develop practical automation solutions and prepare students for technology-driven roles in India's construction and infrastructure ecosystem.
