IIT Bombay Unveils PARAM Rudra Supercomputer Under National Mission

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has inaugurated a new high-performance supercomputing facility named PARAM Rudra, strengthening India’s push toward advanced and indigenous computing. Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), inaugurated the facility on Thursday.

Developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), PARAM Rudra is a three PetaFLOPS supercomputer built under the Build Approach of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). The system runs on indigenously designed Rudra servers created by C-DAC and manufactured in India. It is supported by C-DAC’s native software stack and uses Direct Contact Liquid Cooling technology to improve energy efficiency and performance.

The new facility will support advanced research across disciplines such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, and data-intensive science. According to Prof Karandikar, PARAM Rudra will directly benefit more than 200 faculty members and around 1,200 students at IIT Bombay, while also being accessible to researchers across the country. The system is expected to play a key role in academic research, startup innovation, and industry-led projects.

Sunita Verma, Group Coordinator at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said the Rudra based cluster marks an important milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliant supercomputing. She highlighted the need for sustained investment in hardware, software, processors, and networking to move closer to exascale computing.

Dr. Hemant Darbari, Mission Director of NSM, noted that with this launch, 38 supercomputers with a combined capacity of 44 PetaFLOPS have now been deployed across India. He added that the IIT Bombay facility will also support nearby institutions and strengthen collaborative research outcomes.

The National Supercomputing Mission is jointly led by MeitY and DST, with C-DAC and IISc Bengaluru as implementing partners, focusing on infrastructure, applications, R&D, and skill development.
