The Indian Institute of Management Jammu (IIM Jammu) is set to expand management education in Ladakh with the establishment of a satellite campus in Leh. The Ladakh Administration and IIM Jammu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 25 to establish the new campus.
The new satellite campus will initially offer a four-year BBA (Honours) programme with an intake of 60 students. The first batch is scheduled to begin its academic programme in October 2026. According to IIM Jammu's academic calendar, Semester I classes for the 2026–30 batch are scheduled to commence at the Leh campus on October 27.
Expanding Higher Education Access in Ladakh
The initiative is aimed at expanding access to quality management education for students in the Union Territory. The establishment of an IIM Jammu campus in Leh will allow students from Ladakh to pursue an undergraduate management programme closer to their home region while gaining exposure to a nationally recognised management institute.
The programme has also generated considerable interest among prospective students. Reports said around 600 candidates expressed interest in the initial 60 available seats, highlighting the demand for undergraduate management education in the region.
Focus on Youth and Professional Development
The new campus is expected to create opportunities for students in areas including management, entrepreneurship, innovation and professional development.
“The establishment of the satellite campus marks a significant step in strengthening the higher education system of Ladakh and will open new avenues for the region’s youth in knowledge, innovation, entrepreneurship and professional development,” said Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
The campus is being developed as part of efforts to strengthen higher education infrastructure in Ladakh. Discussions between IIM Jammu and the Ladakh Administration regarding the introduction of undergraduate programmes in Leh began before the formal agreement was signed.
First BBA Batch to Begin in October
The first BBA (Honours) cohort will follow an academic structure involving both Leh and Jammu. IIM Jammu's academic calendar indicates that students will begin their first semester in Leh before moving to the Jammu campus during the winter period.
The establishment of the satellite campus also represents an expansion of IIM Jammu's academic reach beyond its main campus. For students in Ladakh, the initiative provides access to an undergraduate management programme within the Union Territory while connecting them to the academic resources and expertise of an IIM.
With the first batch scheduled to commence in October, the Leh campus is set to become a new centre for management education in the region. The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of local talent while providing students with opportunities to build skills in management, entrepreneurship and related fields.
