The University of Calcutta has revised its undergraduate examination regulations, introducing changes to grade-point calculations, internal assessments and classroom attendance marks for the 2026–27 academic session. The revised framework aims to make academic evaluation clearer while encouraging students to participate regularly in classroom learning.
The changes cover three-year and four-year undergraduate programmes under the university’s Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF), 2022. According to the university’s official examination regulations, the amendments were issued through notifications dated 8 October 2026.
Attendance Marks to Return Under Revised Rules
Under the updated assessment framework, students can earn up to five marks for attendance in each paper per semester. The marks will be awarded according to students’ attendance percentages, making regular classroom participation an important component of academic assessment.
Students with attendance between 90% and 100% can receive five marks, while those attending between 80% and below 90% can earn four marks. Attendance between 75% and below 80% carries three marks, while students with attendance between 60% and below 75% can receive two marks. Students with attendance below 60% receive no attendance marks, subject to the applicable university regulations.
For theory papers in the first six semesters, the assessment structure totals 75 marks. The semester-end written examination accounts for 50 marks, while college-level assessment accounts for 25 marks, including 20 marks for internal assessment and five for attendance.
The university’s decision places renewed emphasis on classroom engagement and encourages students to attend lectures consistently throughout the semester.
New Grading System for Undergraduate Students
The revised regulations also update the process of calculating grade points. Under the published grading scale, students scoring between 90 and 100 marks receive 10 grade points, while scores between 80 and below 90 receive nine points.
Marks between 70 and below 80 carry eight grade points, while scores between 60 and below 70 receive seven points. Students scoring between 50 and below 60 receive six points, and those securing between 40 and below 50 receive five points. Scores between 30 and below 40 carry four grade points, while marks below 30 receive zero grade points.
The revised framework also specifies minimum passing requirements for theory examinations and practical or tutorial components, wherever applicable. Students should consult the regulations relevant to their programmes to understand the complete assessment structure.
University Aligns Assessment With National Standards
University of Calcutta Vice-Chancellor Asutosh Ghosh explained the rationale behind the introduction of the grading system:
“A grading system is mentioned in the National Education Policy 2020. It is required to bring parity with the national level.”
The revised framework is intended to provide students with a clearer understanding of their academic performance and bring assessment practices closer to broader national standards.
The restoration of attendance marks is particularly significant for colleges seeking to strengthen classroom participation. By including attendance in the overall assessment, the university is reinforcing the importance of consistent engagement alongside examination performance.
What Students Need to Know
The amended regulations cover undergraduate students in three-year and four-year programmes under CCF, 2022. Students should review the official notification applicable to their course and confirm any programme-specific requirements with their colleges.
The changes mark an important development in undergraduate assessment at the University of Calcutta, combining a revised grading framework with renewed emphasis on attendance and internal evaluation.
