Every year, United Nations Day is observed on October 24 to mark the anniversary of the United Nations (UN) Charter coming into force in 1945. The day celebrates international cooperation and reminds the world of the importance of peace, human rights, equality and sustainable development.
Education is central to this mission. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. In simple terms, it means every child should have a fair chance to attend school, learn essential skills and build a better future, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Across India, people from different fields are helping advance this goal. From advocating for children's rights and supporting student well-being to encouraging young people to lead social and environmental change, their work shows how education can create opportunities beyond the classroom.
Here are five people whose work connects with the future of children, learning and youth empowerment.
1. Kareena Kapoor Khan
Actress and UNICEF India National Ambassador
Kareena Kapoor Khan has used her public platform to raise awareness about children's rights, early childhood development, education and gender equality. In May 2024, UNICEF India appointed her as its National Ambassador, building on her association with the organisation as a Celebrity Advocate since 2014.
Through this role, she supports efforts to highlight the needs of children, particularly those from vulnerable communities. Her advocacy has included girls' education, foundational learning and children's return to school following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her work brings greater visibility to the importance of ensuring that children receive the support and opportunities they need during their formative years.
